Peru named South America's leading culinary destination in 2016

Lima, Jul. 2. For the fifth consecutive year, Peru has been named South America's Leading Culinary Destination by the World Travel Awards (WTA), heralded by many media as the 'Oscars of the travel industry,' Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Magali Silva announced on Saturday.

Silva underlined the awards given to Lima (as South America's Leading Meetings & Conference Destination) and Peru's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board—PromPeru (as South America's Leading Tourist Board).

“These awards belong to all Peruvians, because this is a result of the hard work in the wide productive chain hand-in-hand with private sectors. Our cuisine’s prestige remains solid and has undergone consolidation. Our promotion efforts are recognized and our leadership in meeting and conference tourism has been confirmed,” she said.

This prize, which honors Peruvian food, adds to the award for Central restaurant —owned by chef Virgilio Martinez and that held its position at No. 4 in the list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants— the 13th place of Mido —owned by chef Mitsuharu Tsumura— and the 30th spot of Astrid & Gaston in the same ranking.

As for the election of Lima as leading meetings & conference destination in the region, it confirms the sustained work carried out by her sector to attract events and improve infrastructure.

Hosted by Lima, Peru, the World Travel Awards Latin America Gala Ceremony saw hundreds of leaders from across the hospitality industry, and was held at Swissôtel Lima, which took the prizes for Latin America’s Leading Hotel and Latin America’s Leading Business Hotel.
